A Proud Moment: Being Featured in UCSF’s Cardiac Research Story

I’m honored to share that I was recently featured in a UCSF Science of Caring article highlighting groundbreaking research led by Dr. Michele Pelter, PhD, RN, on improving the early detection of lethal cardiac arrhythmias. The piece explores how her team is advancing bedside monitoring by comparing traditional ECG systems, UCSF‑developed signal‑processing algorithms, and emerging AI‑driven models.
As part of the clinical environment where this research is being applied, I was photographed and mentioned in the article during a discussion with Dr. Pelter in the cardiac ICU at UCSF Helen Diller Hospital. It was a meaningful moment, not just personally but professionally, to be included in a story that reflects the real-world challenges nurses face with alarm fatigue, false arrhythmias, and the urgency of accurate detection.
Why This Work Matters
False alarms remain a significant barrier to timely recognition of ventricular tachycardia, with up to 90% of alarms being false positives in some settings . As bedside nurses, we navigate this noise daily while still needing to identify true, life‑threatening events within minutes. Dr. Pelter’s research directly addresses this gap by testing new methods that could ultimately improve patient outcomes and support safer, more efficient nursing practice.
My Perspective
During our conversation, I asked Dr. Pelter whether, when she began this work in the 1990s, she ever imagined she’d one day be integrating artificial intelligence into arrhythmia detection. Her answer reflected both the evolution of the field and the reality that AI is powerful, but not magic, and still requires thoughtful, rigorous application in clinical settings.
Being part of this dialogue, and part of the environment where this research is unfolding, reinforces why I’m passionate about critical care nursing: we stand at the intersection of human judgment, technology, and patient advocacy.
Looking Ahead
I’m grateful to be included in this feature and even more grateful to contribute to a unit where innovation is not abstract because it's happening at the bedside, in real time, with the goal of improving patient safety and supporting the nurses who care for them.
